"Thedayisn’tfaraway,now,"herunclesadlyreplied."IdidnottellyouofourtroubleuntilIwasobligedto,dearDorothy,sotheeviltimeisnearathand.Butifyouarequitesureyourfairyfriendswillgiveyouahome,itwillbebestforyoutogotothem,asyourauntsays."
ThatwaswhyDorothywenttoherlittleroomintheatticthatafternoon,takingwithherasmalldognamedToto.ThedoghadcurlyblackhairandbigbrowneyesandlovedDorothyverydearly.
Thechildhadkissedheruncleandauntaffectionatelybeforeshewentupstairs,andnowshelookedaroundherlittleroomratherwistfully,gazingatthesimpletrinketsandworncalicoandginghamdresses,asiftheywereoldfriends.Shewastemptedatfirsttomakeabundleofthem,yetsheknewverywellthattheywouldbeofnousetoherinherfuturelife
