Sothewoodenanimaltrottedonagainandthemeadowgrasswassosoftunderthewheelsthatitmadeeasyriding.ButDorothywasalittleuneasyatlosingthepath,becausenowtherewasnothingtoguidethem.
Nohousesweretobeseenatall,sotheycouldnotasktheirwayofanyfarmer;andalthoughtheLandofOzwasalwaysbeautiful,whereveronemightgo,thispartofthecountrywasstrangetoalltheparty.
"Perhapswe’relost,"suggestedAuntEm,aftertheyhadproceededquiteawayinsilence.
"Nevermind,"saidtheShaggyMan;"I’vebeenlostmanyatime--andsohasDorothy--andwe’vealwaysbeenfoundagain."
"Butwemaygethungry,"remarkedOmbyAmby."Thatistheworstofgettinglostinaplacewheretherearenohousesnear."
"WehadagooddinnerattheFuddletown,"saidUncleHenry,"andthatwillkeepusfromstarvingtodeathforalongtime."
"NooneeverstarvedtodeathinOz,"declaredDorothy,positively;"butpeoplemaygetprettyhungrysometimes."
TheWizardsaidnothing,andhedidnotseemespeciallyanxious.TheSawhorsewastrottingalongbriskly,yettheforestseemedfartherawaythantheyhadthoughtwhentheyfirstsawit.Soitwasnearlysundownwhentheyfinallycametothetrees;butnowtheyfoundthemselvesinamostbeautifulspot,thewide-spreadingtreesbeingcoveredwithfloweringvinesandhavingsoftmossesunderneaththem.
