Sosaying,hethrewitdownatherfeet,where,perhaps,itassumedlife,beingoneoftherodswhichitsownerhadformerlylenttotheEgyptianmagi.Ofthisfact,however,GoodmanBrowncouldnottakecognizance.Hehadcastuphiseyesinastonishment,and,lookingdownagain,beheldneitherGoodyCloysenortheserpentinestaff,buthisfellow-travelleralone,whowaitedforhimascalmlyasifnothinghadhappened.
"Thatoldwomantaughtmemycatechism,"saidtheyoungman;andtherewasaworldofmeaninginthissimplecomment.
Theycontinuedtowalkonward,whiletheeldertravellerexhortedhiscompaniontomakegoodspeedandpersevereinthepath,discoursingsoaptlythathisargumentsseemedrathertospringupinthebosomofhisauditorthantobesuggestedbyhimself.Astheywent,hepluckedabranchofmapletoserveforawalkingstick,andbegantostripitofthetwigsandlittleboughs,whichwerewetwitheveningdew.Themomenthisfingerstouchedthemtheybecamestrangelywitheredanddriedupaswithaweek’ssunshine.Thusthepairproceeded,atagoodfreepace,untilsuddenly,inagloomyhollowoftheroad,GoodmanBrownsathimselfdownonthestumpofatreeandrefusedtogoanyfarther.
