Sometimes,inhismomentsofrageandbitterhatredagainstthesnakeandhimself,Roderickdeterminedtobethedeathofhim,evenattheexpenseofhisownlife.Onceheattempteditbystarvation;but,whilethewretchedmanwasonthepointoffamishing,themonsterseemedtofeeduponhisheart,andtothriveandwaxgamesome,asifitwerehissweetestandmostcongenialdiet.Thenheprivilytookadoseofactivepoison,imaginingthatitwouldnotfailtokilleitherhimselforthedevilthatpossessedhim,orbothtogether.Anothermistake;forifRoderickhadnotyetbeendestroyedbyhisownpoisonedheartnorthesnakebygnawingit,theyhadlittletofearfromarsenicorcorrosivesublimate.Indeed,thevenomouspestappearedtooperateasanantidoteagainstallotherpoisons.
