Accordingly,hisrelativesinterferedandplacedhiminaprivateasylumfortheinsane.Whenthenewswasnoisedabroad,itwasobservedthatmanypersonswalkedthestreetswithfreercountenancesandcoveredtheirbreastslesscarefullywiththeirhands.
Hisconfinement,however,althoughitcontributednotalittletothepeaceofthetown,operatedunfavorablyuponRoderickhimself.Insolitudehismelancholygrewmoreblackandsullen.Hespentwholedays—indeed,itwashissoleoccupation—incommuningwiththeserpent.
