Thisastonishedcatwasmadeallofglassandwassoclearandtransparentthatyoucouldseethroughitaseasilyasthroughawindow.Inthetopofitshead,however,wasamassofdelicatepinkballswhichlookedlikejewelsbutwereintendedforbrains.Ithadaheartmadeofblood-redruby.Theeyesweretwolargeemeralds.But,asidefromthesecolors,alltherestoftheanimalwasofclearglass,andithadaspun-glasstailthatwasreallybeautiful.
"Here,wakeup,"saidCap’nBill."Wewanttotalktoyou."
SlowlytheGlassCatgotuponitsfeed,yawnedandthenlookedatthethreewhostoodbeforeit.
"Howdareyoudisturbme?"itaskedinapeevishvoice."Yououghttobeashamedofyourselves."
"Nevermindthat,"returnedtheSailor."Doyouremembertellin’meyesterday’boutaMagicFlowerinaGoldPot?"
"DoyouthinkI’mafool?Lookatmybrains—youcansee’emwork.OfcourseIremember!"saidthecat.
"Well,wherecanwefindit?"
"Youcan’t.It’snoneofyourbusiness,anyhow.Goawayandletmesleep,"advisedtheGlassCat.
"Now,seehere,"saidDorothy;"wewanttheMagicFlowertogivetoOzmaonherbirthday.You’dbegladtopleaseOzma,wouldn’tyou?"
"I’mnotsure,"repliedthecreature."WhyshouldIwanttopleaseanybody?"
"You’vegotaheart,’causeIcanseeitinsideofyou,"saidTrot.
"Yes;it’saprettyheart,andI’mfondofit,"saidthecat,twistingaroundtoviewitsownbody."Butit’smadefromaruby,andit’shardasnails."
