"I’mafraidof’em;they’redangerous!"saidRuggedo,withashudder.
"Allright,"agreedKiki;"Iwon’taskforeggs."
"Thencomealong,"saidtheNome.
Whentheyenteredtheinn,thelandlordscowledatKikiandsaid:
"ItoldyouIwouldnotfeedyouunlessyouhadmoney."
Kikishowedhimthegoldpiece.
"Andhowaboutyou?"askedthelandlord,turningtoRuggedo."Haveyoumoney?"
"I’vesomethingbetter,"answeredtheoldNome,andtakingabagfromoneofhispocketshepouredfromituponthetableamassofglitteringgems—diamonds,rubiesandemeralds.
Thelandlordwasverypolitetothestrangersafterthat.Heservedthemanexcellentsupper,andwhiletheyateit,theHyupboyaskedhiscompanion:
"Wheredidyougetsomanyjewels?"
"Well,I’lltellyou,"answeredtheNome."WhenthoseOzpeopletookmykingdomawayfromme—justbecauseitwasmykingdomandIwantedtorunittosuitmyself—theysaidIcouldtakeasmanypreciousstonesasIcouldcarry.SoIhadalotofpocketsmadeinmyclothesandloadedthemallup.Jewelsarefinethingstohavewithyouwhenyoutravel;youcantradethemforanything."
