41 The Butcher

           

           IsawagreatdealoftroubleamongthehorsesinLondon,andmuchofitmighthavebeenpreventedbyalittlecommonsense.Wehorsesdonotmindhardworkifwearetreatedreasonably,andIamsuretherearemanydrivenbyquitepoormenwhohaveahappierlifethanIhadwhenIusedtogointheCountessofW——’scarriage,withmysilver-mountedharnessandhighfeeding.

           Itoftenwenttomyhearttoseehowthelittleponieswereused,strainingalongwithheavyloadsorstaggeringunderheavyblowsfromsomelow,cruelboy.OnceIsawalittlegrayponywithathickmaneandaprettyhead,andsomuchlikeMerrylegsthatifIhadnotbeeninharnessIshouldhaveneighedtohim.Hewasdoinghisbesttopullaheavycart,whileastrongroughboywascuttinghimunderthebellywithhiswhipandchuckingcruellyathislittlemouth.CoulditbeMerrylegs?Itwasjustlikehim;butthenMr.Blomefieldwasnevertosellhim,andIthinkhewouldnotdoit;butthismighthavebeenquiteasgoodalittlefellow,andhadashappyaplacewhenhewasyoung.

           Ioftennoticedthegreatspeedatwhichbutchers’horsesweremadetogo,thoughIdidnotknowwhyitwassotillonedaywhenwehadtowaitsometimeinSt.John’sWood.Therewasabutcher’sshopnextdoor,andaswewerestandingabutcher’scartcamedashingupatagreatpace.Thehorsewashotandmuchexhausted;hehunghisheaddown,whilehisheavingsidesandtremblinglegsshowedhowhardhehadbeendriven.Theladjumpedoutofthecartandwasgettingthebasketwhenthemastercameoutoftheshopmuchdispleased.
