26 How it Ended

           

           ItmusthavebeennearlymidnightwhenIheardatagreatdistancethesoundofahorse’sfeet.Sometimesthesounddiedaway,thenitgrewcleareragainandnearer.TheroadtoEarlshallledthroughwoodsthatbelongedtotheearl;thesoundcameinthatdirection,andIhopeditmightbesomeonecominginsearchofus.AsthesoundcamenearerandnearerIwasalmostsureIcoulddistinguishGinger’sstep;alittlenearerstill,andIcouldtellshewasinthedog-cart.Ineighedloudly,andwasoverjoyedtohearanansweringneighfromGinger,andmen’svoices.Theycameslowlyoverthestones,andstoppedatthedarkfigurethatlayupontheground.
