Iwasfeedingquietlynearthepaleswhichseparatedthemeadowfromtherailway,whenIheardastrangesoundatadistance,andbeforeIknewwhenceitcame—witharushandaclatter,andapuffingoutofsmoke—alongblacktrainofsomethingflewby,andwasgonealmostbeforeIcoulddrawmybreath.IturnedandgallopedtothefurthersideofthemeadowasfastasIcouldgo,andthereIstoodsnortingwithastonishmentandfear.Inthecourseofthedaymanyothertrainswentby,somemoreslowly;thesedrewupatthestationcloseby,andsometimesmadeanawfulshriekandgroanbeforetheystopped.Ithoughtitverydreadful,butthecowswentoneatingveryquietly,andhardlyraisedtheirheadsastheblackfrightfulthingcamepuffingandgrindingpast.
ForthefirstfewdaysIcouldnotfeedinpeace;butasIfoundthatthisterriblecreaturenevercameintothefield,ordidmeanyharm,Ibegantodisregardit,andverysoonIcaredaslittleaboutthepassingofatrainasthecowsandsheepdid.
SincethenIhaveseenmanyhorsesmuchalarmedandrestiveatthesightorsoundofasteamengine;butthankstomygoodmaster’scare,Iamasfearlessatrailwaystationsasinmyownstable.
