           Glennardhad,perhapsunconsciously,countedonthecontinuanceofthiseasiermood.Hehadalwaystakenprideinacertainrobustnessoffibrethatenabledhimtohardenhimselfagainsttheinevitable,toconverthisfailuresintothebuildingmaterialsofsuccess.Thoughitdidnotevennowoccurtohimthatwhathecalledtheinevitablehadhithertobeenthealternativehehappenedtoprefer,hewasyetobscurelyawarethathispresentdifficultywasonenottobeconjuredbyanyaffectationofindifference.Somegriefsbuildthesoulaspacioushouse—butinthismiseryofGlennard’shecouldnotstandupright.Itpressedagainsthimateveryturn.Hetoldhimselfthatthiswasbecausetherewasnoescapefromthevisibleevidencesofhisact.The“Letters”confrontedhimeverywhere.Peoplewhohadneveropenedabookdiscussedthemwithcriticalreservations;tohavereadthemhadbecomeasocialobligationincirclestowhichliteratureneverpenetratesexceptinapersonalguise.
