           Thepeasantgirl—Kilmenywashername—couldnotreportsuchgrandthingsasDurante,for,astheshepherdsays,tellingherstoryasItellDiamond’s—

           “Kilmenyhadbeensheknewnotwhere,

           AndKilmenyhadseenwhatshecouldnotdeclare;

           Wheretheriverswayedalivingstream,

           Andthelightapureandcloudlessbeam:

           Thelandofvisionitwouldseem,

           Andstillaneverlastingdream.”

           

           Thelasttwolinesaretheshepherd’sownremark,andamatterofopinion.Butitisclear,Ithink,thatKilmenymusthavedescribedthesamecountryasDurantesaw,though,nothavinghisexperience,shecouldneitherunderstandnordescribeitsowell.

           NowImustgiveyousuchfragmentsofrecollectionasDiamondwasabletobringbackwithhim.

           Whenhecametohimselfafterhefell,hefoundhimselfatthebackofthenorthwind.NorthWindherselfwasnowheretobeseen.Neitherwasthereavestigeofsnoworoficewithinsight.Thesuntoohadvanished;butthatwasnomatter,fortherewasplentyofacertainstillraylesslight.Whereitcamefromheneverfoundout;buthethoughtitbelongedtothecountryitself.Sometimeshethoughtitcameoutoftheflowers,whichwereverybright,buthadnostrongcolour.
