ThiswasnotDiamond’sexperience,butthenDurante—thatwasthenameoftheItalian,anditmeansLasting,forhisbookswilllastaslongasthereareenoughmenintheworldworthyofhavingthem—Durantewasanelderlyman,andDiamondwasalittleboy,andsotheirexperiencemustbealittledifferent.Thepeasantgirl,ontheotherhand,fellfastasleepinawood,andwokeinthesamecountry.
Indescribingit,Durantesaysthatthegroundeverywheresmeltsweetly,andthatagentle,even-temperedwind,whichneverblewfasterorslower,breathedinhisfaceashewent,makingalltheleavespointoneway,notsoastodisturbthebirdsinthetopsofthetrees,but,onthecontrary,soundingabasstotheirsong.Hedescribesalsoalittleriverwhichwassofullthatitslittlewaves,asithurriedalong,bentthegrass,fullofredandyellowflowers,throughwhichitflowed.Hesaysthatthepureststreamintheworldbesidethisonewouldlookasifitweremixedwithsomethingthatdidnotbelongtoit,evenalthoughitwasflowingeverinthebrownshadowofthetrees,andneithersunnormooncouldshineuponit.HeseemstoimplythatitisalwaysthemonthofMayinthatcountry.Itwouldbeoutofplacetodescribeherethewonderfulsightshesaw,forthemusicofthemisinanotherkeyfromthatofthisstory,andIshallthereforeonlyaddfromtheaccountofthistraveller,thatthepeopletherearesofreeandsojustandsohealthy,thateveryoneofthemhasacrownlikeakingandamitrelikeapriest.
