           Ihavebeenaskedtotellyouaboutthebackofthenorthwind.AnoldGreekwritermentionsapeoplewholivedthere,andweresocomfortablethattheycouldnotbearitanylonger,anddrownedthemselves.Mystoryisnotthesameashis.IdonotthinkHerodotushadgottherightaccountoftheplace.Iamgoingtotellyouhowitfaredwithaboywhowentthere.

           Helivedinalowroomoveracoach-house;andthatwasnotbyanymeansatthebackofthenorthwind,ashismotherverywellknew.Foronesideoftheroomwasbuiltonlyofboards,andtheboardsweresooldthatyoumightrunapenknifethroughintothenorthwind.Andthenletthemsettlebetweenthemwhichwasthesharper!Iknowthatwhenyoupulleditoutagainthewindwouldbeafteritlikeacatafteramouse,andyouwouldknowsoonenoughyouwerenotatthebackofthenorthwind.Still,thisroomwasnotverycold,exceptwhenthenorthwindblewstrongerthanusual:theroomIhavetodowithnowwasalwayscold,exceptinsummer,whenthesuntookthematterintohisownhands.Indeed,IamnotsurewhetherIoughttocallitaroomatall;foritwasjustaloftwheretheykepthayandstrawandoatsforthehorses.

           AndwhenlittleDiamond—butstop:Imusttellyouthathisfather,whowasacoachman,hadnamedhimafterafavouritehorse,andhismotherhadhadnoobjection:—whenlittleDiamond,then,laythereinbed,hecouldhearthehorsesunderhimmunchingawayinthedark,ormovingsleepilyintheirdreams.
