           “Nowlet’sgoanddigforstars,”saidonewhoseemedtobethecaptainofthetroop.

           Theyallscurriedaway,butsoonreturned,oneafteranother,eachwithapickaxeonhisshoulderandaspadeinhishand.Assoonastheyweregathered,thecaptainledtheminastraightlinetoanotherpartofthehill.Diamondroseandfollowed.

           “Hereiswherewebeginourlessonforto-night,”hesaid.“Scatteranddig.”

           Therewasnomorefun.Eachwentbyhimself,walkingslowlywithbentshouldersandhiseyesfixedontheground.Everynowandthenonewouldstop,kneeldown,andlookintently,feelingwithhishandsandpartingthegrass.Onewouldgetupandwalkonagain,anotherspringtohisfeet,catcheagerlyathispickaxeandstrikeitintothegroundonceandagain,thenthrowitaside,snatchuphisspade,andcommencediggingattheloosenedearth.Nowonewouldsorrowfullyshoveltheearthintotheholeagain,trampleitdownwithhislittlebarewhitefeet,andwalkon.Butanotherwouldgiveajoyfulshout,andaftermuchtuggingandlooseningwoulddrawfromtheholealumpasbigashishead,ornobiggerthanhisfist;whentheundersideofitwouldpoursuchablazeofgoldenorbluishlightintoDiamond’seyesthathewasquitedazzled.Goldandbluewerethecommonercolours:thejubilationwasgreateroverredorgreenorpurple.Andeverytimeastarwasdugupallthelittleangelsdroppedtheirtoolsandcrowdedaboutit,shoutinganddancingandflutteringtheirwing-buds.
