Chapter XXV. Diamond's Dream

           Butheavoidedit,andwhenitfell,gotuponit.Henowsawthattheopeningthroughwhichthewatercamepouringinwasoverhishead,andwiththehelpofthestonehescrambledoutbyit,andfoundhimselfonthesideofagrassyhillwhichroundedawayfromhimineverydirection,anddownwhichcamethebrookwhichvanishedinthehole.Butscarcelyhadhenoticedsomuchasthisbeforeamerryshoutingandlaughterburstuponhim,andanumberofnakedlittleboyscamerunning,everyoneeagertogettohimfirst.Attheshouldersofeachflutteredtwolittlewings,whichwereofnouseforflying,astheyweremerebuds;onlybeingmadeforittheycouldnothelpflutteringasiftheywereflying.Justastheforemostofthetroopreachedhim,oneortwoofthemfell,andtherestwithshoutsoflaughtercametumblingoverthemtilltheyheapedupamoundofstrugglingmerriment.Oneafteranothertheyextricatedthemselves,andeachashegotfreethrewhisarmsroundDiamondandkissedhim.Diamond’sheartwasreadytomeltwithinhimfromcleardelight.Whentheyhadallembracedhim,—

           “Nowletushavesomefun,”criedone,andwithashouttheyallscamperedhitherandthither,andplayedthewildestgambolsonthegrassyslopes.TheykeptconstantlycomingbacktoDiamond,however,asthecentreoftheirenjoyment,rejoicingoverhimasiftheyhadfoundalostplaymate.

           Therewasawindonthehillsidewhichblewliketheveryembodimentoflivinggladness.ItblewintoDiamond’sheart,andmadehimsohappythathewasforcedtositdownandcry.
