           HisfatherhadintendedgoingonthestandatKing’sCrossthatmorning,andhadturnedintoGray’sInnLanetodrivethere,whentheyfoundthewayblockedup,anduponinquirywereinformedthatastackofchimneyshadbeenblowndowninthenight,andhadfallenacrosstheroad.Theywerejustclearingtherubbishaway.Diamond’sfatherturned,andmadeforCharingCross.

           Thatnightthefatherandmotherhadagreatdealtotalkabout.

           “Poorthings!”saidthemother.“it’sworseforthemthanitisforus.Youseethey’vebeenusedtosuchgrandthings,andforthemtocomedowntoalittlepokyhouselikethat—itbreaksmyhearttothinkofit.”

           “Idon’tknow”saidDiamondthoughtfully,“whetherMrs.Colemanhadbellsonhertoes.”

           “Whatdoyoumean,child?”saidhismother.

           “Shehadringsonherfingers,anyhow,”returnedDiamond.

           “Ofcourseshehad,asanyladywould.Whathasthattodowithit?”

           “WhenweweredownatSandwich,”saidDiamond,“yousaidyouwouldhavetopartwithyourmother’sring,nowwewerepoor.”

           “Blessthechild;heforgetsnothing,”saidhismother.“Really,Diamond,abodywouldneedtomindwhattheysaytoyou.”

           “Why?”saidDiamond.“Ionlythinkaboutit.”

           “That’sjustwhy,”saidthemother.

           “Whyisthatwhy?”persistedDiamond,forhehadnotyetlearnedthatgrown-uppeoplearenotoftensomuchgrownupthattheynevertalklikechildren—andspoiltonestoo.
