Chapter XVII. Diamond Goes On

           Colemantookoutherpurse,saying:

           “Andwhat’syourfare,Joseph?”

           Hejumpedonhisboxbeforeshecouldsayanotherword,andwithapartingsalutedroveoff,leavingthemonthepavement,withthemaidholdingthedoorforthem.

           ItwasalongtimenowsinceDiamondhadseenNorthWind,oreventhoughtmuchabouther.Andashisfatherdrovealong,hewasthinkingnotabouther,butaboutthecrossing-sweeper,andwaswonderingwhatmadehimfeelasifheknewherquitewell,whenhecouldnotrememberanythingofher.Butapicturearoseinhismindofalittlegirlrunningbeforethewindanddraggingherbroomafterher;andfromthat,bydegrees,herecalledthewholeadventureofthenightwhenhegotdownfromNorthWind’sbackinaLondonstreet.Buthecouldnotquitesatisfyhimselfwhetherthewholeaffairwasnotadreamwhichhehaddreamedwhenhewasaverylittleboy.Onlyhehadbeentothebackofthenorthwindsince—therecouldbenodoubtofthat;forwhenhewokeeverymorning,healwaysknewthathehadbeenthereagain.Andashethoughtandthought,herecalledanotherthingthathadhappenedthatmorning,which,althoughitseemedamereaccident,mighthavesomethingtodowithwhathadhappenedsince.
