           HefilledChristine’smind,throughtheterrorwithwhichheinspiredher,butthedearchild’sheartbelongedwhollytotheVicomteRaouldeChagny.Whiletheyplayedabout,likeaninnocentengagedcouple,ontheupperfloorsoftheOpera,toavoidthemonster,theylittlesuspectedthatsomeonewaswatchingoverthem.Iwaspreparedtodoanything:tokillthemonster,ifnecessary,andexplaintothepoliceafterward.ButErikdidnotshowhimself;andIfeltnonethemorecomfortableforthat.
