Thetwomenmighthavestumbledoverthem,wakingthemupandprovokingarequestforexplanations.Forthemoment,M.Mifroid’sinquirysavedthemfromanysuchunpleasantencounters.

Buttheywerenotlefttoenjoytheirsolitudeforlong.Othershadesnowcamedownbythesamewaybywhichthedoor-shuttershadgoneup.Eachoftheseshadescarriedalittlelanternandmoveditabout,above,belowandallaround,asthoughlookingforsomethingorsomebody.
