ThePersianstoppedRaouland,inthesoftestofwhispers,asked:

Andtheycontinuedtheirroad.AftergoingupanddownseveralstaircaseswhichRaoulhadneverseenbefore,thetwomenfoundthemselvesinfrontofadoorwhichthePersianopenedwithamaster-key.ThePersianandRaoulwereboth,ofcourse,indress-clothes;but,whereasRaoulhadatallhat,thePersianworetheastrakhancapwhichIhavealreadymentioned.Itwasaninfringementoftherulewhichinsistsuponthetallhatbehindthescenes;butinFranceforeignersareallowedeverylicense:theEnglishmanhistraveling-cap,thePersianhiscapofastrakhan.
"Sir,"saidthePersian,"yourtallhatwillbeinyourway:youwoulddowelltoleaveitinthedressing-room."
"Whatdressing-room?"askedRaoul.

AndthePersian,lettingRaoulthroughthedoorwhichhehadjustopened,showedhimtheactress’roomopposite.TheywereattheendofthepassagethewholelengthofwhichRaoulhadbeenaccustomedtotraversebeforeknockingatChristine’sdoor.
"HowwellyouknowtheOpera,sir!"
"Notsowellas’he’does!"saidthePersianmodestly.
