Raouldressedinfrantichaste,preparedtoforgethisdistressbyflinginghimself,aspeoplesay,into"thevortexofpleasure."Alas,hewasaverysorryguestand,leavinghisbrotherearly,foundhimself,byteno’clockintheevening,inacab,behindtheLongchamprace-course.
Itwasbitterlycold.Theroadseemeddesertedandverybrightunderthemoonlight.Hetoldthedrivertowaitforhimpatientlyatthecornerofanearturningand,hidinghimselfaswellashecould,stoodstampinghisfeettokeepwarm.Hehadbeenindulginginthishealthyexerciseforhalfanhourorso,whenacarriageturnedthecorneroftheroadandcamequietlyinhisdirection,atawalkingpace.
Asitapproached,hesawthatawomanwasleaningherheadfromthewindow.And,suddenly,themoonshedapalegleamoverherfeatures.
