WhenIthoughtofmyfamily,myfriends,mycountrymen,orthehumanraceingeneral,Iconsideredthem,astheyreallywere,Yahoosinshapeanddisposition,perhapsalittlemorecivilized,andqualifiedwiththegiftofspeech;butmakingnootheruseofreason,thantoimproveandmultiplythoseviceswhereoftheirbrethreninthiscountryhadonlythesharethatnatureallottedthem.WhenIhappenedtobeholdthereflectionofmyownforminalakeorfountain,Iturnedawaymyfaceinhorroranddetestationofmyself,andcouldbetterendurethesightofacommonYahoothanofmyownperson.ByconversingwiththeHouyhnhnms,andlookinguponthemwithdelight,Ifelltoimitatetheirgaitandgesture,whichisnowgrownintoahabit;andmyfriendsoftentellme,inabluntway,"thatItrotlikeahorse;"which,however,Itakeforagreatcompliment.NeithershallIdisown,thatinspeakingIamapttofallintothevoiceandmanneroftheHouyhnhnms,andhearmyselfridiculedonthataccount,withouttheleastmortification.
