           TheHouyhnhnmsusethehollowpart,betweenthepasternandthehoofoftheirfore-foot,aswedoourhands,andthiswithgreaterdexteritythanIcouldatfirstimagine.Ihaveseenawhitemareofourfamilythreadaneedle(whichIlentheronpurpose)withthatjoint.Theymilktheircows,reaptheiroats,anddoalltheworkwhichrequireshands,inthesamemanner.Theyhaveakindofhardflints,which,bygrindingagainstotherstones,theyformintoinstruments,thatserveinsteadofwedges,axes,andhammers.Withtoolsmadeoftheseflints,theylikewisecuttheirhay,andreaptheiroats,whichtheregrownaturallyinseveralfields;theYahoosdrawhomethesheavesincarriages,andtheservantstreadthemincertaincoveredhutstogetoutthegrain,whichiskeptinstores.Theymakearudekindofearthenandwoodenvessels,andbaketheformerinthesun."
