TheHouyhnhnmshavenoletters,andconsequentlytheirknowledgeisalltraditional.Buttherehappeningfeweventsofanymomentamongapeoplesowellunited,naturallydisposedtoeveryvirtue,whollygovernedbyreason,andcutofffromallcommercewithothernations,thehistoricalpartiseasilypreservedwithoutburdeningtheirmemories.Ihavealreadyobservedthattheyaresubjecttonodiseases,andthereforecanhavenoneedofphysicians.However,theyhaveexcellentmedicines,composedofherbs,tocureaccidentalbruisesandcutsinthepasternorfrogofthefoot,bysharpstones,aswellasothermaimsandhurtsintheseveralpartsofthebody.
Theycalculatetheyearbytherevolutionofthesunandmoon,butusenosubdivisionsintoweeks.Theyarewellenoughacquaintedwiththemotionsofthosetwoluminaries,andunderstandthenatureofeclipses;andthisistheutmostprogressoftheirastronomy.
Inpoetry,theymustbeallowedtoexcelallothermortals;whereinthejustnessoftheirsimiles,andtheminutenessaswellasexactnessoftheirdescriptions,areindeedinimitable.Theirversesaboundverymuchinbothofthese,andusuallycontaineithersomeexaltednotionsoffriendshipandbenevolenceorthepraisesofthosewhowerevictorsinracesandotherbodilyexercises.Theirbuildings,althoughveryrudeandsimple,arenotinconvenient,butwellcontrivedtodefendthemfromallinjuriesofandheat.
