Thiswasamatterofdiversiontomymasterandhisfamily,aswellasofmortificationtomyself.FornowIcouldnolongerdenythatIwasarealYahooineverylimbandfeature,sincethefemaleshadanaturalpropensitytome,asoneoftheirownspecies.Neitherwasthehairofthisbruteofaredcolour(whichmighthavebeensomeexcuseforanappetitealittleirregular),butblackasasloe,andhercountenancedidnotmakeanappearancealtogethersohideousastherestofherkind;forIthinkshecouldnotbeaboveelevenyearsold.
Havinglivedthreeyearsinthiscountry,thereader,Isuppose,willexpectthatIshould,likeothertravellers,givehimsomeaccountofthemannersandcustomsofitsinhabitants,whichitwasindeedmyprincipalstudytolearn.
AsthesenobleHouyhnhnmsareendowedbynaturewithageneraldispositiontoallvirtues,andhavenoconceptionsorideasofwhatisevilinarationalcreature,sotheirgrandmaximis,tocultivatereason,andtobewhollygovernedbyit.Neitherisreasonamongthemapointproblematical,aswithus,wheremencanarguewithplausibilityonbothsidesofthequestion,butstrikesyouwithimmediateconviction;asitmustneedsdo,whereitisnotmingled,obscured,ordiscoloured,bypassionandinterest.
