           Norris’ssharpreprimandtoFanny;“Iwasoutaboveanhour.Isatthree-quartersofanhourintheflower-garden,whileFannycuttheroses;andverypleasantitwas,Iassureyou,butveryhot.Itwasshadyenoughinthealcove,butIdeclareIquitedreadedthecominghomeagain.”

           “Fannyhasbeencuttingroses,hasshe?”

           “Yes,andIamafraidtheywillbethelastthisyear.Poorthing!Shefoundithotenough;buttheyweresofull-blownthatonecouldnotwait.”

           “Therewasnohelpforit,certainly,”rejoinedMrs.Norris,inarathersoftenedvoice;“butIquestionwhetherherheadachemightnotbecaughtthen,sister.Thereisnothingsolikelytogiveitasstandingandstoopinginahotsun;butIdaresayitwillbewellto-morrow.Supposeyouletherhaveyouraromaticvinegar;Ialwaysforgettohaveminefilled.”

           “Shehasgotit,”saidLadyBertram;“shehashaditeversinceshecamebackfromyourhousethesecondtime.”

           “What!”criedEdmund;“hasshebeenwalkingaswellascuttingroses;walkingacrossthehotparktoyourhouse,anddoingittwice,ma’am?Nowonderherheadaches.”

           Mrs.NorriswastalkingtoJulia,anddidnothear.

           “Iwasafraiditwouldbetoomuchforher,”saidLadyBertram;“butwhentherosesweregathered,yourauntwishedtohavethem,andthenyouknowtheymustbetakenhome.”

           “Butwerethererosesenoughtoobligehertogotwice?”

           “No;buttheyweretobeputintothespareroomtodry;and,unluckily,Fannyforgottolockthedooroftheroomandbringawaythekey,soshewasobligedtogoagain.
