           Mr.RushworthwasfromthefirststruckwiththebeautyofMissBertram,and,beinginclinedtomarry,soonfanciedhimselfinlove.Hewasaheavyyoungman,withnotmorethancommonsense;butastherewasnothingdisagreeableinhisfigureoraddress,theyoungladywaswellpleasedwithherconquest.Beingnowinhertwenty-firstyear,MariaBertramwasbeginningtothinkmatrimonyaduty;andasamarriagewithMr.Rushworthwouldgivehertheenjoymentofalargerincomethanherfather’s,aswellasensureherthehouseintown,whichwasnowaprimeobject,itbecame,bythesameruleofmoralobligation,herevidentdutytomarryMr.Rushworthifshecould.Mrs.Norriswasmostzealousinpromotingthematch,byeverysuggestionandcontrivancelikelytoenhanceitsdesirablenesstoeitherparty;and,amongothermeans,byseekinganintimacywiththegentleman’smother,whoatpresentlivedwithhim,andtowhomsheevenforcedLadyBertramtogothroughtenmilesofindifferentroadtopayamorningvisit.Itwasnotlongbeforeagoodunderstandingtookplacebetweenthisladyandherself.Mrs.
