           Asthehorsecontinuedinname,aswellasfact,thepropertyofEdmund,Mrs.NorriscouldtolerateitsbeingforFanny’suse;andhadLadyBertrameverthoughtaboutherownobjectionagain,hemighthavebeenexcusedinhereyesfornotwaitingtillSirThomas’sreturninSeptember,forwhenSeptembercameSirThomaswasstillabroad,andwithoutanynearprospectoffinishinghisbusiness.UnfavourablecircumstanceshadsuddenlyarisenatamomentwhenhewasbeginningtoturnallhisthoughtstowardsEngland;andtheverygreatuncertaintyinwhicheverythingwastheninvolveddeterminedhimonsendinghomehisson,andwaitingthefinalarrangementbyhimself.Tomarrivedsafely,bringinganexcellentaccountofhisfather’shealth;buttoverylittlepurpose,asfarasMrs.Norriswasconcerned.SirThomas’ssendingawayhissonseemedtohersolikeaparent’scare,undertheinfluenceofaforebodingofeviltohimself,thatshecouldnothelpfeelingdreadfulpresentiments;andasthelongeveningsofautumncameon,wassoterriblyhauntedbytheseideas,inthesadsolitarinessofhercottage,astobeobligedtotakedailyrefugeinthedining-roomofthePark.Thereturnofwinterengagements,however,wasnotwithoutitseffect;andinthecourseoftheirprogress,hermindbecamesopleasantlyoccupiedinsuperintendingthefortunesofhereldestniece,astolerablytoquiethernerves.
