           Accordingly,onthisprinciple,SirThomastookthefirstopportunityofsayingtoher,withamildgravity,intendedtobeovercoming,“Well,Fanny,IhaveseenMr.Crawfordagain,andlearnfromhimexactlyhowmattersstandbetweenyou.Heisamostextraordinaryyoungman,andwhateverbetheevent,youmustfeelthatyouhavecreatedanattachmentofnocommoncharacter;though,youngasyouare,andlittleacquaintedwiththetransient,varying,unsteadynatureoflove,asitgenerallyexists,youcannotbestruckasIamwithallthatiswonderfulinaperseveranceofthissortagainstdiscouragement.Withhimitisentirelyamatteroffeeling:heclaimsnomeritinit;perhapsisentitledtonone.Yet,havingchosensowell,hisconstancyhasarespectablestamp.Hadhischoicebeenlessunexceptionable,Ishouldhavecondemnedhispersevering.”
