           Thefirstfeelingwasdisappointment:hehadhopedbetterthings;hehadthoughtthatanhour’sentreatyfromayoungmanlikeCrawfordcouldnothaveworkedsolittlechangeonagentle-temperedgirllikeFanny;buttherewasspeedycomfortinthedeterminedviewsandsanguineperseveranceofthelover;andwhenseeingsuchconfidenceofsuccessintheprincipal,SirThomaswassoonabletodependonithimself.

           Nothingwasomitted,onhisside,ofcivility,compliment,orkindness,thatmightassisttheplan.Mr.Crawford’ssteadinesswashonoured,andFannywaspraised,andtheconnexionwasstillthemostdesirableintheworld.AtMansfieldParkMr.Crawfordwouldalwaysbewelcome;hehadonlytoconsulthisownjudgmentandfeelingsastothefrequencyofhisvisits,atpresentorinfuture.Inallhisniece’sfamilyandfriends,therecouldbebutoneopinion,onewishonthesubject;theinfluenceofallwholovedhermustinclineoneway.

           Everythingwassaidthatcouldencourage,everyencouragementreceivedwithgratefuljoy,andthegentlemenpartedthebestoffriends.

           Satisfiedthatthecausewasnowonafootingthemostproperandhopeful,SirThomasresolvedtoabstainfromallfartherimportunitywithhisniece,andtoshewnoopeninterference.Uponherdispositionhebelievedkindnessmightbethebestwayofworking.Entreatyshouldbefromonequarteronly.Theforbearanceofherfamilyonapoint,respectingwhichshecouldbeinnodoubtoftheirwishes,mightbetheirsurestmeansofforwardingit.
