           Quiteunpractisedinsuchsortofnote-writing,hadtherebeentimeforscruplesandfearsastostyleshewouldhavefelttheminabundance:butsomethingmustbeinstantlywritten;andwithonlyonedecidedfeeling,thatofwishingnottoappeartothinkanythingreallyintended,shewrotethus,ingreattremblingbothofspiritsandhand—

           “Iamverymuchobligedtoyou,mydearMissCrawford,foryourkindcongratulations,asfarastheyrelatetomydearestWilliam.TherestofyournoteIknowmeansnothing;butIamsounequaltoanythingofthesort,thatIhopeyouwillexcusemybeggingyoutotakenofarthernotice.IhaveseentoomuchofMr.Crawfordnottounderstandhismanners;ifheunderstoodmeaswell,hewould,Idaresay,behavedifferently.IdonotknowwhatIwrite,butitwouldbeagreatfavourofyounevertomentionthesubjectagain.Withthanksforthehonourofyournote,Iremain,dearMissCrawford,etc.,etc.”

           Theconclusionwasscarcelyintelligiblefromincreasingfright,forshefoundthatMr.Crawford,underpretenceofreceivingthenote,wascomingtowardsher.
