           LadyBertramagreedtoitallwithacalm“Yes”;andattheendofaquarterofanhour’ssilentconsiderationspontaneouslyobserved,“SirThomas,Ihavebeenthinking—andIamverygladwetookFannyaswedid,fornowtheothersareawaywefeelthegoodofit.”

           SirThomasimmediatelyimprovedthiscomplimentbyadding,“Verytrue.WeshewFannywhatagoodgirlwethinkherbypraisinghertoherface,sheisnowaveryvaluablecompanion.Ifwehavebeenkindtoher,sheisnowquiteasnecessarytous.”

           “Yes,”saidLadyBertrampresently;“anditisacomforttothinkthatweshallalwayshaveher.”

           SirThomaspaused,halfsmiled,glancedathisniece,andthengravelyreplied,“Shewillneverleaveus,Ihope,tillinvitedtosomeotherhomethatmayreasonablypromisehergreaterhappinessthansheknowshere.”

           “Andthatisnotverylikelytobe,SirThomas.Whoshouldinviteher?MariamightbeverygladtoseeheratSothertonnowandthen,butshewouldnotthinkofaskinghertolivethere;andIamsuresheisbetteroffhere;andbesides,Icannotdowithouther.”

           TheweekwhichpassedsoquietlyandpeaceablyatthegreathouseinMansfieldhadaverydifferentcharacterattheParsonage.Totheyounglady,atleast,ineachfamily,itbroughtverydifferentfeelings.WhatwastranquillityandcomforttoFannywastediousnessandvexationtoMary.Somethingarosefromdifferenceofdispositionandhabit:onesoeasilysatisfied,theothersounusedtoendure;butstillmoremightbeimputedtodifferenceofcircumstances.
