           “Wemissourtwoyoungmen,”wasSirThomas’sobservationonboththefirstandsecondday,astheyformedtheirveryreducedcircleafterdinner;andinconsiderationofFanny’sswimmingeyes,nothingmorewassaidonthefirstdaythantodrinktheirgoodhealth;butontheseconditledtosomethingfarther.Williamwaskindlycommendedandhispromotionhopedfor.“Andthereisnoreasontosuppose,”addedSirThomas,“butthathisvisitstousmaynowbetolerablyfrequent.AstoEdmund,wemustlearntodowithouthim.Thiswillbethelastwinterofhisbelongingtous,ashehasdone.”

           “Yes,”saidLadyBertram,“butIwishhewasnotgoingaway.Theyareallgoingaway,Ithink.Iwishtheywouldstayathome.”

           ThiswishwaslevelledprincipallyatJulia,whohadjustappliedforpermissiontogototownwithMaria;andasSirThomasthoughtitbestforeachdaughterthatthepermissionshouldbegranted,LadyBertram,thoughinherowngood-natureshewouldnothavepreventedit,waslamentingthechangeitmadeintheprospectofJulia’sreturn,whichwouldotherwisehavetakenplaceaboutthistime.AgreatdealofgoodsensefollowedonSirThomas’sside,tendingtoreconcilehiswifetothearrangement.Everythingthataconsiderateparentoughttofeelwasadvancedforheruse;andeverythingthatanaffectionatemothermustfeelinpromotingherchildren’senjoymentwasattributedtohernature.
