           Andthoughtherewasnosecondglancetodisturbher,thoughhisobjectseemedthentobeonlyquietlyagreeable,shecouldnotgetthebetterofherembarrassment,heightenedasitwasbytheideaofhisperceivingit,andhadnocomposuretillheturnedawaytosomeoneelse.Thenshecouldgraduallyriseuptothegenuinesatisfactionofhavingapartner,avoluntarypartner,securedagainstthedancingbegan.

           Whenthecompanyweremovingintotheballroom,shefoundherselfforthefirsttimenearMissCrawford,whoseeyesandsmileswereimmediatelyandmoreunequivocallydirectedasherbrother’shadbeen,andwhowasbeginningtospeakonthesubject,whenFanny,anxioustogetthestoryover,hastenedtogivetheexplanationofthesecondnecklace:therealchain.MissCrawfordlistened;andallherintendedcomplimentsandinsinuationstoFannywereforgotten:shefeltonlyonething;andhereyes,brightastheyhadbeenbefore,shewingtheycouldyetbebrighter,sheexclaimedwitheagerpleasure,“Didhe?DidEdmund?Thatwaslikehimself.Noothermanwouldhavethoughtofit.Ihonourhimbeyondexpression.”Andshelookedaroundasiflongingtotellhimso.Hewasnotnear,hewasattendingapartyofladiesoutoftheroom;andMrs.Grantcominguptothetwogirls,andtakinganarmofeach,theyfollowedwiththerest.

           Fanny’sheartsunk,buttherewasnoleisureforthinkinglongevenofMissCrawford’sfeelings.Theywereintheballroom,theviolinswereplaying,andhermindwasinaflutterthatforbadeitsfixingonanythingserious.
