           TheentranceoftheGrantsandCrawfordswasafavourableepoch.Thestiffnessofthemeetingsoongavewaybeforetheirpopularmannersandmorediffusedintimacies:littlegroupswereformed,andeverybodygrewcomfortable.Fannyfelttheadvantage;and,drawingbackfromthetoilsofcivility,wouldhavebeenagainmosthappy,couldshehavekepthereyesfromwanderingbetweenEdmundandMaryCrawford.Shelookedallloveliness—andwhatmightnotbetheendofit?HerownmusingswerebroughttoanendonperceivingMr.Crawfordbeforeher,andherthoughtswereputintoanotherchannelbyhisengagingheralmostinstantlyforthefirsttwodances.Herhappinessonthisoccasionwasverymuchalamortal,finelychequered.Tobesecureofapartneratfirstwasamostessentialgood—forthemomentofbeginningwasnowgrowingseriouslynear;andshesolittleunderstoodherownclaimsastothinkthatifMr.Crawfordhadnotaskedher,shemusthavebeenthelasttobesoughtafter,andshouldhavereceivedapartneronlythroughaseriesofinquiry,andbustle,andinterference,whichwouldhavebeenterrible;butatthesametimetherewasapointednessinhismannerofaskingherwhichshedidnotlike,andshesawhiseyeglancingforamomentathernecklace,withasmile—shethoughttherewasasmile—whichmadeherblushandfeelwretched.
