           Soendedtheirdiscourse,which,foranyveryappropriateserviceitcouldrenderFanny,mightaswellhavebeenspared,forMrs.Norrishadnotthesmallestintentionoftakingher.Ithadneveroccurredtoher,onthepresentoccasion,butasathingtobecarefullyavoided.Topreventitsbeingexpected,shehadfixedonthesmallesthabitationwhichcouldrankasgenteelamongthebuildingsofMansfieldparish,theWhiteHousebeingonlyjustlargeenoughtoreceiveherselfandherservants,andallowaspareroomforafriend,ofwhichshemadeaveryparticularpoint.ThespareroomsattheParsonagehadneverbeenwanted,buttheabsolutenecessityofaspareroomforafriendwasnowneverforgotten.Notallherprecautions,however,couldsaveherfrombeingsuspectedofsomethingbetter;or,perhaps,herverydisplayoftheimportanceofaspareroommighthavemisledSirThomastosupposeitreallyintendedforFanny.LadyBertramsoonbroughtthemattertoacertaintybycarelesslyobservingtoMrs.Norris—

           “Ithink,sister,weneednotkeepMissLeeanylonger,whenFannygoestolivewithyou.”

           Mrs.Norrisalmoststarted.“Livewithme,dearLadyBertram!whatdoyoumean?”

           “Isshenottolivewithyou?IthoughtyouhadsettleditwithSirThomas.”
