“Thefarmyardmustbeclearedawayentirely,andplanteduptoshutouttheblacksmith’sshop.Thehousemustbeturnedtofronttheeastinsteadofthenorth—theentranceandprincipalrooms,Imean,mustbeonthatside,wheretheviewisreallyverypretty;Iamsureitmaybedone.Andtheremustbeyourapproach,throughwhatisatpresentthegarden.Youmustmakeanewgardenatwhatisnowthebackofthehouse;whichwillbegivingitthebestaspectintheworld,slopingtothesouth-east.Thegroundseemspreciselyformedforit.Irodefiftyyardsupthelane,betweenthechurchandthehouse,inordertolookaboutme;andsawhowitmightallbe.Nothingcanbeeasier.Themeadowsbeyondwhatwillbethegarden,aswellaswhatnowis,sweepingroundfromthelaneIstoodintothenorth-east,thatis,totheprincipalroadthroughthevillage,mustbealllaidtogether,ofcourse;veryprettymeadowstheyare,finelysprinkledwithtimber.Theybelongtotheliving,Isuppose;ifnot,youmustpurchasethem.Thenthestream—somethingmustbedonewiththestream;butIcouldnotquitedeterminewhat.Ihadtwoorthreeideas.”
