           “Itsoundslikeit,”saidEdmund;“butwhichwaydidyouturnafterpassingSewell’sfarm?”

           “Ianswernosuchirrelevantandinsidiousquestions;thoughwereItoanswerallthatyoucouldputinthecourseofanhour,youwouldneverbeabletoprovethatitwasnotThorntonLacey—forsuchitcertainlywas.”

           “Youinquired,then?”

           “No,Ineverinquire.ButItoldamanmendingahedgethatitwasThorntonLacey,andheagreedtoit.”

           ThorntonLaceywasthenameofhisimpendingliving,asMissCrawfordwellknew;andherinterestinanegotiationforWilliamPrice’sknaveincreased.

           “Verymuchindeed.Youarealuckyfellow.Therewillbeworkforfivesummersatleastbeforetheplaceisliveable.”

           “No,no,notsobadasthat.Thefarmyardmustbemoved,Igrantyou;butIamnotawareofanythingelse.Thehouseisbynomeansbad,andwhentheyardisremoved,theremaybeaverytolerableapproachtoit.
