           Andwithoutattemptinganyfartherremonstrance,sheleftFannytoherfate,afatewhich,hadnotFanny’sheartbeenguardedinawayunsuspectedbyMissCrawford,mighthavebeenalittleharderthanshedeserved;foralthoughtheredoubtlessaresuchunconquerableyoungladiesofeighteen(oroneshouldnotreadaboutthem)asarenevertobepersuadedintoloveagainsttheirjudgmentbyallthattalent,manner,attention,andflatterycando,IhavenoinclinationtobelieveFannyoneofthem,ortothinkthatwithsomuchtendernessofdisposition,andsomuchtasteasbelongedtoher,shecouldhaveescapedheart-wholefromthecourtship(thoughthecourtshiponlyofafortnight)ofsuchamanasCrawford,inspiteoftherebeingsomepreviousillopinionofhimtobeovercome,hadnotheraffectionbeenengagedelsewhere.Withallthesecuritywhichloveofanotheranddisesteemofhimcouldgivetothepeaceofmindhewasattacking,hiscontinuedattentions—continued,butnotobtrusive,andadaptingthemselvesmoreandmoretothegentlenessanddelicacyofhercharacter—obligedherverysoontodislikehimlessthanformerly.Shehadbynomeansforgottenthepast,andshethoughtasillofhimasever;butshefelthispowers:hewasentertaining;andhismannersweresoimproved,sopolite,soseriouslyandblamelesslypolite,thatitwasimpossiblenottobeciviltohiminreturn.
