           HadSirThomasappliedtohisdaughterwithinthefirstthreeorfourdaysafterHenryCrawford’sleavingMansfield,beforeherfeelingswereatalltranquillised,beforeshehadgivenupeveryhopeofhim,orabsolutelyresolvedonenduringhisrival,heranswermighthavebeendifferent;butafteranotherthreeorfourdays,whentherewasnoreturn,noletter,nomessage,nosymptomofasoftenedheart,nohopeofadvantagefromseparation,hermindbecamecoolenoughtoseekallthecomfortthatprideandselfrevengecouldgive.

           HenryCrawfordhaddestroyedherhappiness,butheshouldnotknowthathehaddoneit;heshouldnotdestroyhercredit,herappearance,herprosperity,too.HeshouldnothavetothinkofheraspiningintheretirementofMansfieldforhim,rejectingSothertonandLondon,independenceandsplendour,forhissake.Independencewasmoreneedfulthanever;thewantofitatMansfieldmoresensiblyfelt.Shewaslessandlessabletoenduretherestraintwhichherfatherimposed.Thelibertywhichhisabsencehadgivenwasnowbecomeabsolutelynecessary.
