           ShehadthehighestesteemforMr.Rushworth’scharacteranddisposition,andcouldnothaveadoubtofherhappinesswithhim.

           SirThomaswassatisfied;toogladtobesatisfied,perhaps,tourgethematterquitesofarashisjudgmentmighthavedictatedtoothers.Itwasanalliancewhichhecouldnothaverelinquishedwithoutpain;andthushereasoned.Mr.Rushworthwasyoungenoughtoimprove.Mr.Rushworthmustandwouldimproveingoodsociety;andifMariacouldnowspeaksosecurelyofherhappinesswithhim,speakingcertainlywithouttheprejudice,theblindnessoflove,sheoughttobebelieved.Herfeelings,probably,werenotacute;hehadneversupposedthemtobeso;buthercomfortsmightnotbelessonthataccount;andifshecoulddispensewithseeingherhusbandaleading,shiningcharacter,therewouldcertainlybeeverythingelseinherfavour.Awell-disposedyoungwoman,whodidnotmarryforlove,wasingeneralbutthemoreattachedtoherownfamily;andthenearnessofSothertontoMansfieldmustnaturallyholdoutthegreatesttemptation,andwould,inallprobability,beacontinualsupplyofthemostamiableandinnocentenjoyments.Suchandsuch-likewerethereasoningsofSirThomas,happytoescapetheembarrassingevilsofarupture,thewonder,thereflections,thereproachthatmustattendit;happytosecureamarriagewhichwouldbringhimsuchanadditionofrespectabilityandinfluence,andveryhappytothinkanythingofhisdaughter’sdispositionthatwasmostfavourableforthepurpose.
