           Ateleveno’clockhewenttobedhimself,smokedforsometimeinhisbedroom,putouthislightathalf-pasteleven,andthen,aswashisinvariablecustom,pulleduptheblindbeforegettingintobed,thathemightseewhichwaythewindblewonopeninghiseyesinthemorning,hisbedroomwindowcommandingaviewoftheflagstaffandvane.Justashehadlaindownhewassurprisedtoobservethewhitepoleofthestaffflashintoexistencelikeastreakofphosphorusdrawndownwardsacrosstheshadeofnightwithout.Onlyoneexplanationmetthis—alighthadbeensuddenlythrownuponthepolefromthedirectionofthehouse.Aseverybodyhadretiredtoresttheoldmanfeltitnecessarytogetoutofbed,openthewindowsoftly,andlooktotherightandleft.Eustacia’sbedroomwaslightedup,anditwastheshinefromherwindowwhichhadlightedthepole.Wonderingwhathadarousedher,heremainedundecidedatthewindow,andwasthinkingoffetchingthelettertoslipitunderherdoor,whenheheardaslightbrushingofgarmentsonthepartitiondividinghisroomfromthepassage.

           ThecaptainconcludedthatEustacia,feelingwakeful,hadgoneforabook,andwouldhavedismissedthematterasunimportantifhehadnotalsoheardherdistinctlyweepingasshepassed.

           “Sheisthinkingofthathusbandofhers,”hesaidtohimself.“Ah,thesillygoose!shehadnobusinesstomarryhim.Iwonderifthatletterisreallyhis?”

           Hearose,threwhisboat-cloakroundhim,openedthedoor,andsaid,“Eustacia!”Therewasnoanswer.
