           Hehandedinaletterandwenthisway.Thegirlbroughtittothecaptain,whofoundthatitwasdirectedtoEustacia.Heturneditoverandover,andfanciedthatthewritingwasherhusband’s,thoughhecouldnotbesure.However,hedecidedtoletherhaveitatonceifpossible,andtookitupstairsforthatpurpose;butonreachingthedoorofherroomandlookinginatthekeyholehefoundtherewasnolightwithin,thefactbeingthatEustacia,withoutundressing,hadflungherselfuponthebed,torestandgatheralittlestrengthforhercomingjourney.Hergrandfatherconcludedfromwhathesawthatheoughtnottodisturbher;anddescendingagaintotheparlourheplacedtheletteronthemantelpiecetogiveittoherinthemorning.
