           Atthistheyclappedtheirhands,andsheescortedthemuptotheBabyWalkandbackagain,oneatatime,puttinganarmorafingerroundtheveryfrail,settingtheirlegrightwhenitgottooridiculous,andtreatingtheforeignonesquiteascourteouslyastheEnglish,thoughshecouldnotunderstandawordtheysaid.

           Theybehavedwellonthewhole,thoughsomewhimperedthatshehadnottakenthemasfarasshetookNancyorGraceorDorothy,andothersjaggedher,butitwasquiteunintentional,andshewastoomuchofaladytocryout.Somuchwalkingtiredherandshewasanxioustobeofftotheball,butshenolongerfeltafraid.Thereasonshefeltnomorefearwasthatitwasnownight-time,andinthedark,youremember,Maimiewasalwaysratherstrange.

           Theywerenowloathtolethergo,for,“Ifthefairiesseeyou,”theywarnedher,“theywillmischiefyou,stabyoutodeathorcompelyoutonursetheirchildrenorturnyouintosomethingtedious,likeanevergreenoak.”Astheysaidthistheylookedwithaffectedpityatanevergreenoak,forinwintertheyareveryenviousoftheevergreens.
