           Howthethrushesapplauded!Nowtheyknewwhytheylinedtheirnestswithmud,andwhenMrs.Finchcalledout,“Wedon’tplaceournestsontheSerpentine,”theydidwhattheyshouldhavedoneatfirst:chasedherfromthemeeting.Afterthisitwasmostorderly.Whattheyhadbeenbroughttogethertohear,saidSolomon,wasthis:theiryoungfriend,PeterPan,astheywellknew,wantedverymuchtobeabletocrosstotheGardens,andhenowproposed,withtheirhelp,tobuildaboat.

           Atthisthethrushesbegantofidget,whichmadePetertrembleforhisscheme.

           Solomonexplainedhastilythatwhathemeantwasnotoneofthecumbrousboatsthathumansuse;theproposedboatwastobesimplyathrush’snestlargeenoughtoholdPeter.

           Butstill,toPeter’sagony,thethrushesweresulky.“Weareverybusypeople,”theygrumbled,“andthiswouldbeabigjob.”

           “Quiteso,”saidSolomon,“and,ofcourse,Peterwouldnotallowyoutoworkfornothing.Youmustrememberthatheisnowincomfortablecircumstances,andhewillpayyousuchwagesasyouhaveneverbeenpaidbefore.PeterPanauthorisesmetosaythatyoushallallbepaidsixpenceaday.”

           Thenallthethrusheshoppedforjoy,andthatverydaywasbegunthecelebratedBuildingoftheBoat.Alltheirordinarybusinessfellintoarrears.
