NorwasthisallthatPeterdidtogainthepowerfuloldfellow’sgoodwill.YoumustknowthatSolomonhadnointentionofremaininginofficeallhislife.Helookedforwardtoretiringby-and-by,anddevotinghisgreenoldagetoalifeofpleasureonacertainyew-stumpintheFigswhichhadtakenhisfancy,andforyearshehadbeenquietlyfillinghisstocking.Itwasastockingbelongingtosomebathingpersonwhichhadbeencastupontheisland,andatthetimeIspeakofitcontainedahundredandeightycrumbs,thirty-fournuts,sixteencrusts,apen-wiperandaboot-lace.
