NextcomesSt.Govor’sWell,whichwasfullofwaterwhenMalcolmtheBoldfellintoit.Hewashismother’sfavourite,andheletherputherarmroundhisneckinpublicbecauseshewasawidow,buthewasalsopartialtoadventuresandlikedtoplaywithachimney-sweepwhohadkilledagoodmanybears.Thesweep’snamewasSooty,andonedaywhentheywereplayingnearthewell,MalcolmfellinandwouldhavebeendrownedhadnotSootydivedinandrescuedhim,andthewaterhadwashedSootycleanandhenowstoodrevealedasMalcolm’slong-lostfather.SoMalcolmwouldnotlethismotherputherarmroundhisneckanymore.
BetweenthewellandtheRoundPondarethecricket-pitches,andfrequentlythechoosingofsidesexhaustssomuchtimethatthereisscarcelyanycricket.Everybodywantstobatfirst,andassoonasheisouthebowlsunlessyouarethebetterwrestler,andwhileyouarewrestlingwithhimthefieldershavescatteredtoplayatsomethingelse.
