           Theymusthavebeen,andwere,inthenotes,aswellasinthewordsofhiswildfantasias(forhenotunfrequentlyaccompaniedhimselfwithrhymedverbalimprovisations),theresultofthatintensementalcollectednessandconcentrationtowhichIhavepreviouslyalludedasobservableonlyinparticularmomentsofthehighestartificialexcitement. ThewordsofoneoftheserhapsodiesIhaveeasilyremembered. Iwas,perhaps,themoreforciblyimpressedwithitashegaveit,because,intheunderormysticcurrentofitsmeaning,IfanciedthatIperceived,andforthefirsttime,afullconsciousnessonthepartofUsherofthetotteringofhisloftyreasonuponherthrone. Theverses,whichwereentitled“TheHauntedPalace,”ranverynearly,ifnotaccurately,thus:
