Iwellrememberthatsuggestionsarisingfromthisballad,ledusintoatrainofthoughtwhereintherebecamemanifestanopinionofUsher’swhichImentionnotsomuchonaccountofitsnovelty(forothermen*havethoughtthus),asonaccountofthepertinacitywithwhichhemaintainedit. Thisopinion,initsgeneralform,wasthatofthesentienceofallvegetablethings. But,inhisdisorderedfancy,theideahadassumedamoredaringcharacter,andtrespassed,undercertainconditions,uponthekingdomofinorganization. Ilackwordstoexpressthefullextent,ortheearnestabandonofhispersuasion. Thebelief,however,wasconnected(asIhavepreviouslyhinted)withthegraystonesofthehomeofhisforefathers.
